Police officers have fired tear gas canisters at participants in the ongoing #June12Protest in Lagos.
Earlier on Saturday, heavily-armed police officers were stationed at strategic places in Lagos, in anticipation of the protest, which was to start at about 7am.
The protest, however, did not start until about 9am when dozens of young people held a banner on which ‘Buhari must go’, ‘#EndSars,’ and so on were written. They also chanted solidarity songs.
Police officers who had initially warned protesters to stay and protest at a location to prevent invasion by hoodlums suddenly turned violent and fired canisters at them.
In a video filmed by FIJ, a male voice could be heard, saying, “This is an officer of the CTU (Counter Terrorism Unit) shooting tear gas.”
As of the time of filing this report, several protesters and reporters on the ground had taken cover.
