Sunmisola Akinpelu, a factory worker in Lagos, has accused the family of his late father, Chief Akinpelu Oyelakin, of denying him his entitlements.

Sunmisola told FIJ that ever since he learned of the circumstances of his birth, he had tried to connect with his father’s family but to no avail.

He said his grandparents told him that Chief Akinpelu impregnated Fatima Adedeji, his mother, in 1990, when she was 16, and rejected the pregnancy.

“My grandparents had to arrest my father before he accepted the pregnancy. After my mother delivered me, my father, who pleaded with my grandparents to resolve the issue peacefully, did not take responsibility for me till his death in 1993,” Sunmisola told FIJ.

“He only came when my mother gave birth to me and left with my placenta. Despite his wealth, I’m yet to receive anything from his family after his death.“

Sunmisola stated that he and his maternal grandparents visited his father’s wife several times on the issue but nothing positive came out of the visits.

He said she always told him that she would organise the family for a meeting so everyone could discuss how to sort out the issue, but he heard nothing after that from her.

“She would always tell me she was going to do something, but she never did. My grandparents are worried. They are getting old and want to get this issue sorted out before they pass on,” he said.

The factory worker also said he had reached out to a human rights activist about the issue, but it did not change the situation.

He said a human rights activist gave him a letter to invite his father’s wife and the family for an interview but they rejected the letter and failed to show up for the interview.

“When we took the matter to Agidigbo FM, they (the family) initially sued the radio station, but when my grandfather requested that he be sued alongside, they brought down their charges,” he said.

Sunmisola said he wondered why his father’s wife and his older siblings were not willing to either help him or give him a portion of his inheritance.

“My brothers and sisters did nothing. neither did they want to recognise me or do anything. My grandparents sponsored me from crèche to OND. Now, I don’t have the funds to do my HND,” he said.

“I used to visit one of my father’s sisters, who is now late. She was going to settle everything, but she passed on before she could. She gave me my father’s pictures in case I got rejected by the family. Here I am, still rejected by my family.”

When FIJ called Chief Akinpelu’s first wife, only identified as Iya Pele, she refused to comment on the issue. She also asked this reporter not to call her number again.

“Don’t call my number again,” she said. “Don’t ask me questions to drink my blood. Don’t ask me any questions. Don’t call this number anymore, I beg you in the name of God.”
