After spending 13 days in juvenile detention, the five Dowen College students suspected in the death of Sylvester Oromoni, a 12-year-old student of the school, have been granted one million naira bail each.

As part of the bail conditions, they were to produce two sureties each. Olatunbosun Adeola passed the judgment in a Chief Magistrate Court, Yaba, Lagos, on Tuesday, after hearing the bail application.

Adeola ruled that sureties must be the defendants’ parents, who must swear an affidavit of compliance, Punch reports.

The magistrate also ruled that the defendants must not be more than two kilometres away from their residences at all times. They were also ordered to submit their travel passports to the court.

There was a sharp contrast between the Oromonis’ storyline and that of Dowen College’s management. Sylvester’s family insisted he died from injuries sustained when he was bullied by seniors in Dowen. But the school refuted the claim, saying Sylvester died from injuries sustained during a game of football within the school premises.

However, the Lagos State Police Command, under the leadership of Hakeem Odumosu, charged the minors for conspiracy and homicide.
