Emmanuella Otuogbai had a life assurance policy with African Alliance Insurance Plc in 2020, but when she requested her accumulated funds in April, 2024, they left her in limbo.

Edward Otuogbai, a lawyer and the father of Emmanuella, the assured, reached out to FIJ on Tuesday to say that Emmanuella, who is also a lawyer, took a life assurance policy worth N1.2 million with African Alliance. The insurance was supposed to mature in September 2025, but the agreement gives room for a surrender of the policy before the maturity date.

“The monthly premium payable by my daughter was N20,000,” Edward explained.

“The maturity date of the policy was 1st of September 2025. However Article 5 of the policy allows for a surrender of the policy by the policy holder provided the premiums have been paid up to the time of the surrender.”

Article 5 of General Condition of the policy

Edward told FIJ that his daughter was entitled to the payment of the surrender value of the policy, which was the sum of N730,380 as as of February 2024. He said the N20,000 premium was paid until February when it was surrendered.

“All necessary claims forms were filled by the policy and a Zenith bank account in the name of Edward Omokhafe Otuogbai was supplied to the company as requested since April 2024,” Edward Otuogbai told FIJ.

FIJ contacted the African Alliance’s human relations officer but she said FIJ should call the contact on the organisation’s website. When FIJ called the number, it did not connect.
