Air Peace has approved a 50% one-way discount on any of its domestic routes to compensate passengers of Flight P47173, which was originally scheduled from Benin to Lagos on November 17 but was cancelled after an earlier postponement.

This announcement came three days after FIJ reported that passengers on Flight P47173 were left stranded after the flight was cancelled.

FIJ reported how the passengers on Flight P47173 incurred extra expenses.

An affected passenger told FIJ that the flight was initially scheduled for 4:15 pm on November 17 but was postponed to 6:15 pm on the same day.

He said that when he got to the Benin Airport, Air Peace staff checked all passengers for the flight to Lagos. However, they left the passengers stranded.

“After the operating aircraft landed from Lagos, we heard shocking news! We learnt that the pilot could not take off because the airport was dark and did not have the facilities for night take-offs,” he narrated.

“For the time wasted, they should have given us refreshments, but they didn’t. After incurring a 50% fee for staying at the hotel beyond noon, I thought that would be my biggest regret for the day until they cancelled.”

A day after FIJ’s report, Air Peace apologised to the affected passengers, vaguely attributing the cancellation to “operational reasons”. However, in a follow-up text sent on Friday, Air Peace clarified that the flight was cancelled due to sunset restrictions.

“P47173 Benin to Lagos for 17th November 2024 was cancelled due to sunset,” part of the text reads.

“Air Peace has approved a 50 per cent one-way discounted ticket (exclusive of tax) on any of our domestic routes as compensation for the inconvenience.”
