Tosin Adekojo, an Oyo State resident, has received N491,700 from Jumia, the full sum she paid for a laptop advertised as brand new but delivered with scratches.

She told FIJ that this long-overdue resolution occurred on Thursday evening, two days after FIJ’s report on Jumia’s refusal to refund her money and over a month after she had been left with no favourable response.

“They were waiting to see what I would do. They knew the laptop was not new as advertised but still sold it, thinking no one would hold them accountable,” Adekojo told FIJ.

“But after your intervention, they refunded my money. Thank you, FIJ, for making them do the right thing.”

On Tuesday, FIJ reported that Adekojo had paid N491,700 for an HP EliteBook 840 G6 on October 12, only to discover the product did not match its “brand new” description.

After opening the package at Jumia’s pick-up store, Adekojo found multiple scratches on the laptop’s body and screen. “The Styrofoam typically found in new products was missing,” she said.

“After paying and opening the package, I found multiple scratches on both the body of the laptop and its screen. I logged the laptop’s Product ID on the official HP website and discovered the warranty had expired. The Styrofoam in new products was not there,” Adekojo told FIJ.

She also said she noticed that the accessories, which included a charger and power pack, had no tags to indicate their authenticity. This led Adekojo to conclude that they were generic replacements with no receipts or warranty cards provided in the package.

When she contacted Jumia, they initially instructed her to return the laptop. However, after she complied, Jumia staff claimed the device had no issues and refused to refund her.
