Jumia, an e-commerce company operating in Nigeria, has made a refund of N162,400 to Wesley Stephen, a web developer resident in Benin, several weeks after withholding his refund on a Redmi Pad SE he returned.

Stephen confirmed Jumia made the payment on Friday, after a month-long delay. He said he received the money in his account on Thursday.

“Jumia refunded the money yesterday. Thank you so much for all the effort you put into it. I humbly appreciate it,” Stephen told FIJ.

The web developer said he got a refund of N162,400 from Jumia instead of N165,000, as he used a voucher which offset the balance.

“I am expecting N162,400 from Jumia. There was a voucher and it offsets the balance,” he explained.

Stephen had ordered the gadget from Jumia on November 8, without knowing it had no SIM card slot. He explained that the features indicated on the product didn’t reveal that.

When Stephen discovered this, he returned the item to Jumia so he could use the money to purchase a suitable replacement. At the point of return, he said Jumia told him that it would take between four and nine days.

“According to Jumia, the return timeline for my region, Benin, is four to nine business days. I returned it on November 14 and the agent picked it up from the pick-up station the next day,” he said.

“This is so that the after-sales team could verify my claim and, within four and nine working days, initiate a refund.

“Also, if the item does not meet the quality check, they were to send a notification for it to be returned.”

Stephen said that weeks after Jumia’s deadline elapsed, they kept saying the product was going through a quality check and was still being reviewed by their team. A Jumia customer care representative agent also confirmed this when FIJ called them on December 23.

Jumia subsequently refunded Stephen on Thursday, two weeks after FIJ’s publication.
