Klasha, a multinational Lagos and San Francisco-based e-commerce startup, has refunded Olaigbe Joseph (not real name), the Akure-based medical doctor whose N570,000 savings vanished in one night.

The refund came less than 24 hours after FIJ published a story relaying how the situation had affected Joseph.

Aroghene Favour Okoro, the company’s marketing lead, shared the new development with FIJ late night on Wednesday.

Arogbene stated that her company’s decision to refund Joseph was out of a “goodwill gesture”.

According to her, someone had phished or hacked Joseph’s account because of his negligence, and not by any breach within the Klasha application.

“Our team thoroughly investigated and determined that no system breach within our Klasha app could have led to the hack. The customer’s email was probably hacked or phished,” she said.

“At Klasha, we prioritise the security of our customers’ details and have implemented 2FA to protect their accounts. This means for your password to be reset, someone has access to your email address. The security of the email address is beyond our control.

“Moreover, as a goodwill gesture, we refunded the customer’s lost funds.”

The doctor subsequently confirmed to FIJ the receipt of the refund.

He, however, insisted that the problem could not have been from him as he had always secured his account details.

“My account has 2-step verification. The whole thing still looks suspicious to me,” he said.
