OPay has made an N18,284 refund to Abdullahi Ayuba, a POS operator residing in the Mile 12 area of Lagos.
This came eight days after FIJ reported how the digital bank deducted the amount from Ayuba’s account for an N83,140 he did not owe.
“I want to thank FIJ so much for coming to my rescue,” Ayuba said on Wednesday morning.
“On Monday, I mean August 26, OPay refunded all the money they debited from my account.
“They credited me with exactly the N18,284 they debited from my account in July.
“May God continue to bless you, your works and your families. Thank you once again.”
On August 20, FIJ published a story on how OPay indiscriminately deducted a total of N18,264 from Ayuba’s account while trying to recover an N83,140 he did not owe the bank.

Trouble started when the POS operator transferred N83,140 from his OPay account to his Fairmoney account on June 24.
Due to a system glitch, the transfer he made, despite successfully impacting his Fairmoney account, also got reversed to his OPay account.
This then meant he had the N83,140 lying in both his OPay and Fairmoney.
The incident remained unknown to Ayuba until Fairmoney brought it to his notice in July.

Meanwhile, and while acting on an instruction sent to it by OPay, Fairmoney had also placed a restriction on all the money Ayuba had in his account at the time.
After Ayuba eventually retransferred the money to Fairmoney on July 5, however, OPay would continue to carry out indiscriminate deductions on the POS operator’s account.
Before he reached out to FIJ on the matter on August 19, N18,264 had so far been indiscriminately debited from his account by OPay.
