Monday Dienye, a small business owner in Lagos, has narrated how Zuma Cash, an online loan company, sent a defamatory message about him to his contacts before the expiration of a loan he took from them.

Dienye said he had taken the loan to cater for a need involving his business, and the period for repayment was yet to elapse when Zuma Cash sent a defamatory message to him and everyone on his contact list.

“I took a loan of N12,000 from Zuma Cash on July 1. I was to repay with N17,460. The window for repayment was within seven days and the loan was due on July, 8,” he told FIJ.

“My loan was meant to be due on a Friday. I believe they should have waited till the end of the day, and if the money was not paid, then they could take it up from there.

“I told the customer service person I spoke with that I was expecting some money and would repay the loan later in the day. He called, but I’d rather chat with him because I didn’t want anyone abusing me over the phone.

One of the messages from Zuma Cash’s agents.

Deinye said the Zuma Cash agent called to threaten him every hour to repay the loan before it was overdue.

“Every hour, he would threaten me via calls and text messages, and I assured him I was going to pay.

“I tried getting the money that day but business was a bit dull and I couldn’t get the money. When I got home around 7 pm, I had to borrow from another platform to make the refund, but unfortunately, he had sent a crazy message to some of my contacts.

“I assume that such messages should only be sent as a last resort when they can’t reach the person, and not for someone still talking to them and giving them hope of repayment,” he said.

FIJ sent text messages to Zuma Cash but they were yet to be respond to it at press time.
