Fireworks have gone off across New Zealand on Saturday as the country celebrates the new year ahead of the rest of the world.

Streets of Wellington, Auckland and other major cities are experiencing major human traffic as residents troop out to celebrate entering 2022.

For New Zealanders, being ahead of the Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT) by 12 hours means they get to see a new year first, while the rest of the world catches up.

On Friday (Thursday in Nigeria) the country eased rules on public gatherings in time for New Year’s Eve after a scare over the COVID-19 Omicron variant.
