Femi Fani-Kayode, an ex-chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has come under fire for joining the All Progressives Congress (APC), a party he had been vocally critical of since it grabbed power in 2015.

After years of criticising the ruling party, Fani-Kayode appeared to soften his stance in February when he spoke on an alleged defection plan. He said his decision would be made, and he would live with it.

His opinion piece on the topic read in part: “I owe no one any explanation for what I will do or will not do tomorrow. I will gladly live with the consequences of my actions and decisions, and I will defend myself and explain my actions when I choose to do so, if I believe it is ever necessary.”

FIJ highlights six times he got under the skin of the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari.

‘FEBRUARY 2015: I CAN NEVER SUPPORT YOU, GENERAL BUHARI

During a debate on ‘Politics Today’, a Channels Television Programme, Fani-Kayode’s credibility was questioned by Rotimi Amaechi, a fellow guest on the programme. In his response, Fani-Kayode said Muhammadu Buhari, APC’s presidential candidate at the time and eventual winner of the 2015 presidential election, offered him a key position which he rejected, saying, “I can never support you General Buhari,” he said.

MARCH 2015: APC THRIVES ON LIES

While serving as the Director of Media and Publicity of the Peoples Democratic Party, Fani-Kayode, in the weeks leading to the 2015 general elections, described the APC as a party that thrives on lies and should be pitied. He said, “Frankly, the APC deserves to be pitied. So desperate are they for power that their latest strategy is to come up with a different lie for every day of the week.”

AUGUST 2016: BUHARI’S GOVERNMENT TOTALITARIAN

A year and two months after the Buhari assumed power, Fani-Kayode reviewed his government and gave a damning verdict. He wrote, “We have been turned from a democracy where the freedom of speech once reigned and where the criticism of the president and the government was welcome and even encouraged into a totalitarian police state where the press is muzzled, judges are muscled and legislators are threatened and docked.”

NOVEMBER 2018: BUHARI LACKS CONFIDENCE, SELF-RESPECT, SUFFERS LOW SELF-ESTEEM

Reacting to his claims that the PDP plunged Nigeria into debt, Fani-Kayode blasted the president for “displaying nothing but hatred”. He said, “What type of leader displays nothing but hatred and contempt for his predecessors in office and for his people? The truth is that Buhari lacks confidence and has no self-respect. He suffers from low self-esteem and has a big chip on his shoulder.”

DECEMBER 2019: I WOULD RATHER DIE THAN JOIN THE ALMAJIRIS PEOPLES CONGRESS’

With rumours of Fani-Kayode leaving the PDP earlier in 2019, he took offence and came out to clear the air. He minced no words when he said, “The suggestion that I joined the APC is false and insulting. Those that are peddling this fake news should bury their heads in shame. With what we have witnessed, I would rather die than join a filthy, rat-infested sinking ship like the Almajiri Peoples Congress (APC).”

NOVEMBER 2020: BUHARI ONLY GOOD AT ORDERING ARMY TO KILL CITIZENS

Following the US military’s successful rescue of an American abducted in Niger and brought into Nigeria, Fani-Kayode revisited the October 2020 shooting of #EndSARS protesters at Lekki Tollgate, Lagos, and attacked the Buhari administration. He said, “Nigerian Army is only good at killing its own citizens and the Nigerian President is only good at ordering them to do so. Shame on you!”

On Thursday, Fani-Kayode joined forces with the APC and was all smiles with the president and leaders of the party he effortlessly found fault in for six years.
