James Ogberu, a teacher in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has narrated how Dr. Andrew Yakubu, a former lecturer at the Federal University of Lafia, duped him out of N100,000.
Ogberu told FIJ that Yakubu told him in 2020 that he could help him secure a job at the Federal University of Lafia if he wanted.
The teacher said Yakubu called him out of the blue in February 2020, asking him to send N100,000 for the vacant position of an administrative officer at one of the newly created faculties in the university, but he made it clear he had no such money.
However, Yakubu persuaded him to find a means to send the money to him because the “opportunity was golden,” he said.

“As a teacher, I didn’t have such money. I had to borrow the said amount and send it to his GT account on February 18, 2020. There has been no job interview, offer, or refund since then. Worse, he keeps promising to refund the money, but all of my appeals have now gone unanswered,” Ogberu told FIJ.
Ogberu said he waited throughout 2020 and part of 2021 for the job but did not get it. He said he realised in June 2021 that Ogberu would neither help him with the job nor refund him.
“We used to interact on WhatsApp, but later on, the messages I sent stopped delivering. He wouldn’t take his calls either, but he’d leave a message saying he’d call back,” Ogberu explained.
In December 2021, Yakubu asked Ogberu to call him on a certain date, promising to pay, but as usual, he did not answer his calls when Ogberu called him.
He said he waited and hoped Yakubu would pay him in 2022, but he claimed he couldn’t pay because of the 2022 Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike.
Ogberu said Yakubu assured him he would refund the N100,000 if he called him on December 15, 2022, which he did, but the call was not answered.
“I told him I would adopt legal measures to get my money if he refused to pay me, but he said I was free to go ahead. He’s frustrating my demands,” he said.
“He’s now the head of the Special Comprehensive School in Lafia. I don’t want to disrespect him because of the respect that I have for a relative of his, Honourable Kwanta Yakubu Bohar, current Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources, Nasarawa State. I just want him to pay me.”
FIJ called Yakubu several times, but the calls were not answered. A text message sent to him had also not been responded to at press time.
