One year after fighting tooth and nail on national television to defend Bola Tinubu’s policies, Jesutega Onokpasa, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has described the President as a failure.
Onokpasa, a lawyer and former member of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, had appeared on Arise Television on October 30, 2023, shortly after the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal affirmed Tinubu’s victory.
In a heated exchange with Rufai Oseni, an Arise TV broadcast journalist, Onokpasa had defended the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira, insisting that the economic decisions were necessary and shifting responsibility for the consequences away from the Tinubu government.

During that interview, Onokpasa accused the presenter of adopting a rude tone. He firmly maintained his support for the administration’s early economic reforms.
However, in a fresh interview with Arise TV on Sunday, Onokpasa said the Tinubu government had failed to deliver on its promises and was presiding over growing hunger and hardship across the country.

“Which done deal? There is hunger in the land. Let us feed our citizens first. Let’s govern well. It’s not a question of even defecting to our party. It’s a question of us ruling well. And in that angle, we have failed woefully. Bola Tinubu has failed woefully to rule well, to provide food for Nigerians, to give succour in these hard times,” he said when asked about recent defections to the APC.
Onokpasa further said: “You cannot pretend there’s no hunger. You cannot pretend that people are finding it difficult to make ends meet. When Bola Tinubu called us to support him, he promised to make food cheap. At that time, we were being insulted. We were called agbadorians and all that. We told him, let us just produce food. That’s what he promised us. Only for him to come to power and only God understands what he is doing. I am certainly not supporting him for 2027.”
It’s not the first of Onokpasa’s criticism of the government in recent months. In a December interview with Arise Television, declared that he would not back Tinubu for a second term.
