On Saturday, some residents of Sokoto took over the roads to protest the arrests made over Deborah Samuel’s killing.

A mob killed Deborah on Thursday over alleged blasphemy committed on a WhatsApp group chat. She was a female student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto.

These protesters became agitated and resorted to violence. Videos show a few buildings burnt and vandalised. Some persons have also shared false information using videos and pictures they claimed were from Sokoto.

“Bishop Kukah’s House, Cathedral and 1Billion Naira Catholic Pastoral Centre Set Ablaze by Muslims in Sokoto, Nigeria. Development Story of Terror Attack by Islamists,” one of the misleading headlines shared on social media read.

Aminu Tambuwal, Governor of Sokoto State, ordered a 24-hour curfew on Saturday to suppress the protests before they turned more violent.
