Six graduates of Bras Polytechnic, a private tertiary institution at Igbaja in Kwara State, have been arrested over fake statements of result issued by the school.

FIJ gathered that after the students’ arrest during screening at their respective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps across Nigeria, five of them were released and subsequently banned from the camps.

However, Ayomilekan Dada, who was arrested and detained in a police station on Sunday, is yet to be granted bail.

DECEIVED TO BE ADMITTED

After three years of futile attempts to gain admission to a government-owned institution following the completion of his National Diploma in 2015, Dada decided to further his education at a private school.

He was glad Bras Polytechnic offered him admission, but wasn’t aware the school had not completed the accreditations that would qualify its graduates for NYSC and had instead been affiliating with Plateau State Polytechnic for NYSC mobilisation.

While Dada and 20 other colleagues were studying, they were asked to pay N100,000 for the regularisation of courses with the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB).

“We paid and hoped that there would be no issue during our NYSC mobilisation,” Dada said while in detention.

“Upon graduation, our details were sent to Plateau Poly through the Bras Poly Registrar to facilitate our NYSC mobilisation, but when the senate’s list came out, we didn’t find our names.”

Dada also said that the school deceived them to register for NYSC despite the error, on the grounds that they could apply for a change of name later.

“Before my own set was deployed, two sets had been successfully deployed and are currently observing the NYSC programme. So, I was hoping the error between the two schools would be fixed.”

In the long run, the students received NYSC call-up letters and also got results bearing Plateau State Polytechnic a few days before the NYSC camps were opened for prospective corps members.

BRAS POLY EXPOSED

On arrival at the orientation camp in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State, on Sunday, September 5, Dada was found to be in possession of fake documents.

The camp officials revealed that his statement of results was fake, as a graduate of Plateau Polytechnic with a genuine statement of result had presented it earlier.

In a quick defence, Dada told the officials his colleagues, with similar documents, were deployed for youth service in different states.

Consequently, five of his colleagues were tracked down to their respective camps and arrested. Dada was also arrested for forgery of results and arraigned in an Adamawa court.

However, Dada’s hearing was adjourned until September 21, while his colleagues were released a few days after their arrest.

FIJ obtained the names of the other five students but will not publish them now so as not to jeopardise their chances of getting justice from the polytechnic.

A friend of Dada, who asked not to be named, told FIJ that the school was using ‘strange political influence’ to silence the Police and evade sanctions.

“The Adamawa Police have visited the school in Ilorin for investigation, but they failed to arrest anyone from there,” the source said. “The school’s Registrar has also told our family to sort out the troubles ourselves because they are not ready to drag themselves into the mess.”

When FIJ contacted Obasanjo Ajibade, the Registrar of Bras Polytechnic, he told our reporter he had resigned from the school.

‘BRAS POLY PROPRIETOR TRIES TO BRIBE FIJ REPORTER’

Bolaji Atunse, the Proprietor of Bras Polytechnic (pictured), tried to bribe our reporter in a bid to protect his ‘good name’.

He said: “We are not the ones that issued them the results, but Plateau State Polytechnic. I was told about this issue you mentioned. It is between that school and the students.”

When our reporter reminded him that Dada had been abandoned in police custody for five days, Atunse said he would get him out.

“I will arrange lawyers who will go there and bail the young man, but I beg you not to publish any report. After securing his bail, we will now face Plateau State Polytechnic that issued the certificate.”

“I need a good name, but if you publish any report on a certificate scandal, it will bring down my name. Please, don’t publish the report. Just ignore it and I will compensate you.”

Meanwhile, not only does Bras Polytechnic issue fake documents to students, the home page of its official website bears a picture of a building that has now been identified as the Senate Building of the Adekunle Ajasin University, AKungba-Akoko, Ondo State.
