13.06.2023 Journalism BREAKING: Akpabio Becomes Senate President

Senator Godswill Akpabio has been elected president of the 10th Senate of Nigeria in an election he contested with Senator Abdulaziz Yari, a former Nasarawa State Governor.

Nominations of the two candidates set the tone for the commencement of the election and the voting process was carried out in alphabetical order of states.

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, nominated Akpabio as a candidate and his nomination was seconded by Solomon Yayi, a senator from Ogun West Senatorial Constituency.

Ishiaku Abbo from Adamawa North Senatorial District nominated Yari.

Akpabio is a two-term former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and anointed candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He scored 63 votes to succeed Ahmed Lawan, the immediate past Senate President.
