Nubari Saatah, the president of the Niger Delta Congress (NDC), who was arrested on Tuesday after calls for protest against emergency rule in Rivers State, has regained freedom.
Amaniye King, the founding chairman of the NDC, disclosed this to FIJ. He said Sataah got out of police custody around 7:25 pm on Wednesday, more than 24 hours after he was detained.
FIJ earlier reported how the Octopus Squad of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) arrested the national president on Tuesday evening.
This was after the group called for a peaceful protest against the state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers.
NDC condemned the move as well as the accompanying suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the state house of assembly.
FIJ understands that Saatah was not the only NDC leader targeted by the police. Mudiaga Ogboru, the national spokesperson, received an invite to appear at the Lagos State Intelligence Department on Tuesday morning.
He also got a call from one ACP Jimoh Babatunde who told him he needed to report to a police division in Rivers.
President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state on March 18 due to the lingering political crisis.
