Rep Tajudeen Abbas, a lawmaker representing the Zaria Federal Constituency, has been elected as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Abbas, who has been in the House since 2011, was the preferred speakership candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 10th assembly.
According to the rules of the house, the mode of election was open ballot, a system that required the lawmakers to stand up and name the candidate of their choice openly.
Three candidates, Idris Wase, the outgoing Deputy Speaker from Wase Federal Constituency; Aminu Sani-Jaji; and Abbas; were on the speakership ballot.
Idris Wase and Jaji got three votes each and Abbas scored 353 votes.
Before the election commenced, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, the outgoing majority leader of the House, nominated Abbas for the election, while Nnolim Nnaji seconded him.
Tijjani Kayode Ismail from Offa/Oyun/Ifelodun Federal Constituency in Kwara State nominated Wase, and Ali Muhammed from Nasarawa State seconded the nomination.
The clerk of the house, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, supervised the voting process.
Out of the 360 federal representatives-elect, 359 voted. This was due to the death of Isma’ila Maihanchi, who was elected for the Jalingo, Yerro, and Zing Federal Constituency, Taraba State.
