A petrol filling station belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in Bajulaye, Shomolu area of Lagos State, is extorting customers.

Akorede Abiodun, a customer who drove to the station to purchase N10,000 worth of petrol on Saturday, told FIJ that he was asked by the attendants to pay N1,000 before he would be allowed to refuel his car and jerrycan.

He said he had been at the station for over 20 minutes due to the long queues, but when it got to his turn, he learnt those before him had been forced to pay sums ranging from N200 to N1,000 due to petrol scarcity.

“I was on the queue; when it came to my turn, they asked me to pay N1,000 before they would sell fuel into my car and the keg in the trunk of my car,” he told FIJ. “If you’re buying like 15 to 20 litres, they will collect N300.

“Those ones that came with kegs alone, they are charging N200. I overheard them.”

Abiodun said an attendant simply identified as Wale was the one attempting to extort him, while another lady operating another pump machine was extorting others.

After condemning them and demanding to make his purchase without paying the bribe, he was eventually attended to as Wale and others begged him not to create a scene.

FIJ earlier reported how some fuel stations in Lagos began rationing the product after the importation of adulterated petrol caused a shortage.
