The government of Cross River State has decided to evacuate its indigenes from Jos, Plateau State, over recent killings in the state capital.

This was contained in a statement signed by Michael Wellington, Director-General of the Cross River Migration Control Agency (MCA), on Saturday.

“In response to the current security situation in Jos, Plateau State, the Government of Cross River State has made security and logistic provisions for the evacuation of Cross River State students and indigenes in Jos to Cross River State,” the statement reads in part.

Violent clashes between nomadic Fulani herdsmen, who are mostly Muslims, and Christian farmers have rocked Plateau for decades. On Wednesday, FIJ reported that over 70 people had been killed between July and August in a series of attacks within the Miango District of Bassa Local Government Area of the state.

Cross River indigenes who feel unsafe and are willing to return to their home state are encouraged to contact Lekan Macaulay, MCA’s Head of Administrative duties, on +234 810 306 2058.

Macaulay told FIJ that a couple of their indigenes were already showing interest in leaving Jos.

“The government would begin the evacuation process as soon as we are done collating the list,” he said. “Students would be allowed to return to school as soon as we are sure the situation has been calmed.”
