Dana Air is yet to refund N224,170 to Emeka Obilor, a Lagos State resident whose Lagos to Enugu flight was cancelled by the airline in July 2022.

FIJ had first reported the matter on August 21, 2024.

“I have not heard from Dana Air and its officials for close to three years now and it is quite disheartening and unacceptable,” Obilor told FIJ on Thursday.

“I have written to them several times, requesting that my N224,170 be refunded but they have not done that.

“The flight was cancelled in July 2022, and to date, nothing has been done by the airline or whoever it is that is now in charge of refund to give me my money back.

“It has been close to 31 months since the flight was cancelled. If Dana had been kind enough to give me back my money, it would have solved other pressing issues I am currently facing. They have continued to hold on to my money and it is unfair.”

On August 21, 2024, FIJ reported how Dana Air cancelled a Lagos–Enugu flight Obilor booked for himself, his wife and three children. The flight booking cost him N224,170 on July 19, 2022.

A day after Obilor made the flight booking, however, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) suspended Dana Air’s Air Transport Licence (ATL) and Air Operator Certificate (AOC) indefinitely.

Dana Air was suspended during the period because the NCAA believed it was no longer in a position to meet its financial obligations and to conduct safe flight operations.

The Airline subsequently asked Obilor to fill out a refund form, promising him that a refund would be made in August 2022.

However, the refund never came and this prompted the passenger to send numerous emails and place several phone calls to Dana Air, demanding his money.

When FIJ eventually sent a message to Dana Air’s WhatsApp customer care line for a reaction to Obilor’s complaint on August 16, 2024, one of the airline’s officials, who did not state his or her name, issued the following response four days later:

“Please note that these (Obilor’s) refund details have been escalated to the relevant unit. Feedback will be provided as soon as possible.”

Feedback was never provided to Obilor and he has still not received a refund.

In September 2024, the NCAA announced that NG Eagle would be responsible for honouring flight tickets and processing refunds for passengers affected by the suspension of Dana Air’s operations.

“The Authority is also aware that Dana Air customers who paid for flights that were not operated due to its suspension have sought refunds of their airfares and have been patiently waiting,” the NCAA stated.

“In line with NCAA’s regulatory obligations, the DGCA, Capt Chris Najomo, and his management team has(sic) met with Dana Air and its new partners, NG Eagle, to resolve these complaints. The resolution is that NG Eagle will be taking up this obligation.”

While responding to an email on a matter similar to Obilor’s in December, however, an NG Eagle official, who chose to simply identify herself as Princess, wrote:

“We acknowledge receipt of your enquiry regarding the partnership between NG Eagle Limited and Dana Airlines Limited. In response, we would like to clarify the scope of our collaboration.

“Contrary to public assumptions, NG Eagle Limited does not handle refunds or reprotection for Dana Airlines. For any related requests, please contact Dana Airlines Limited directly.

“In accordance with established procedures, NG Eagle Limited will only provide assistance to passengers whose details have been formally communicated to us by Dana Airlines Limited, with the knowledge and approval of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), as part of specific reprotection arrangements.

“Passengers not covered under these arrangements are advised to resolve their issues directly with Dana Airlines Limited.”

At the time of this publication, Obilor’s N224,170 has not been refunded to him.
