FIJ’s intervention has moved OPay, the fintech company operating in Nigeria, to refund customer Stephanie Ugboma’s N50,100 which had been stuck in limbo since 2023.
Stephanie Ugboma used her OPay Visa card to withdraw cash on a PalmPay POS machine in July 2023. While the N50,100 transaction was declined, her account was debited. Ugboma took numerous steps to reclaim her money, but OPay did not process the refund.
According to Atanda Michael (not real name), Ugboma’s brother, who reached out to FIJ on August 24, he and his sister had tried every possible avenue of contacting OPay, yet, nothing was done.
“I went to PalmPay’s office. They said the money was with OPay. When I went to OPay’s office, they opened a ticket for me and said they were working on it,” Michael told FIJ.
“After a while, they will close the ticket. I will go again, they will open another ticket; after a while, they will close it again. That’s how it has been since 2023 till now.”

FIJ contacted Adeyemi Adekunle, OPay’s spokesman, on August 26 to lodge a complaint. Adekunle told FIJ he would contact OPay’s team to address the anomaly.
On Monday, FIJ reached out to Adekunle again to know the stage of the refund process. He informed FIJ that OPay had made the refund, a fact Michael also confirmed.
“God will bless you and Mr Fisayo,” Michael said after confirming the refund on Monday.
