Rukayat Thompson (not real name), an Oyo State resident, has narrated how Cashlawn, an online money-lending outfit, continues to harass her for interest on a loan she never requested.
Thompson told FIJ that the incident happened minutes after she deleted Cashlawn’s application from her phone on May 22.
“On May 10, an unknown contact reached out to me on WhatsApp and introduced herself as a Cashlawn sales agent,” Thompson said.
“After she introduced herself, she said I stood a chance of obtaining a loan as high as N100,000 from Cashlawn. I, however, immediately told her that I was not interested.

“After a while, she reached out to me again and said the interest I would be paying on the loan was very low and that unlike before, Cashlawn no longer harassed, defamed and insulted people for loan repayment.

“In the end, and to get her off my back, I decided to download and fill my information on Cashlawn’s application. After doing that, I did not take any loan from the application. I felt I could always log in anytime and obtain one whenever I had the need for it.”
SHOCKING PHONE CALL SEVEN DAYS LATER
Thompson told FIJ that she would receive a shocking phone call from the same Cashlawn agent seven days later.
“On May 17, I suddenly received a call from the same Cashlawn agent, and this time, she no longer chatted with me in a friendly tone,” said Thompson.
“She, instead, addressed me rudely, saying I should better pay back the loan I had borrowed on May 10 or face the unpleasant consequence that would follow.

“I initially thought she was joking and told her she was talking to the wrong person. When she kept insisting that I had taken a loan, however, I was forced to check my mobile banking statement.
“When I did, I shockingly discovered that I had been sent N8,050 on May 10, the day I downloaded the application and filled my information on it.
“These guys are criminals! I never personally took the N8,050 loan from the app.
“What I think happened was that Cashlawn had intentionally and dubiously sent the N8,050 to my bank account after I included my bank details on my profile.
“Who does that? That is criminal. They forced a loan I never took down my throat. What’s even worse was the fact that I was also made to pay 105 percent interest on it after seven days.”

FORCED REPAYMENT
Thompson told FIJ that she immediately sourced for funds among friends and family to repay the loan and the interest on it.
“When I repaid N16,570, being the sum Cashlawn dubiously forced down my throat, I immediately deleted my information from their application,” said Thompson.
“Luckily, I videoed myself while removing my information from the application. I did it because I never wanted anything to do with Cashlawn again.”
A SECOND SURPRISING MOVE

Thomson told FIJ that after she wiped out her information from Cashlawn’s application, the online money-lending outfit made a second surprising move on her.
“On May 22, I was at home when I suddenly received another unwanted N25,650 credit from Cashlawn,” said the Ibadan resident.

“This time, I did not waste time. I immediately sent the money back to Cashlawn. They did it the first time and got away with it. I made sure they did not shove the unwanted loan down my throat a second time.

“Like I said, I sent the money back immediately.”
When Thompson returned the unwanted N25,650 loan to Cashlawn, the same agent who had been interacting with her called to demand for an additional N24,075 interest payment.

“When I showed her evidence that I had returned the unwanted loan back to Cashlawn immediately, she was adamant in her demand. She insisted I pay the additional N24,075 to her company.
“A loan I did not take? I lost my cool and told her off. She then started threatening me, saying if I did not pay the said interest, they would send defamatory messages to all my phone contacts. She also said they would tell all my loved ones that I had died from a horrible illness.
“I wonder why these criminals are, all of a sudden, now being allowed to feast off people again. There was a time the FCCPC clipped their wings. What changed?

“The Cashlawn agent has continued to harass and threaten me for no justifiable cause.”
FIJ made several phone calls to the Cashlawn agent responsible for a reaction on Wednesday morning, but they were not responded to.
Despite reading the WhatsApp message sent to her, she still did not respond.
