Five weeks after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invited Subomi and Wahab, sons of businessman Rasaq Okoya who filmed the misuse of currency notes, the agency has kept mute on any imposed sanction.
A video clip showing the siblings spraying different naira denominations emerged on social media on January 7. While they both danced to a promotion for Subomi’s upcoming song, a policeman held wads of new banknotes for them.
When the video went viral, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) detained the officer for his ‘unethical’ role in the abuse of naira and vowed to make him face disciplinary action.

The EFCC, on the other hand, invited Subomi and Wahab to appear at the commission’s Lagos office on January 13. However, no update has been provided on disciplinary actions taken against them.
Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act prohibits the reckless handling, defacing or abuse of the naira notes.
It prescribes a six-month prison term, N50,000 fine or a combination of both for anyone found guilty upon prosecution.
Dele Oyewale, the EFCC spokesperson, could not be reached for comments on Monday as his line was switched off. The text message and email sent to him had also not been responded to at press time.

In January, many Nigerian social media users questioned the police for victimising the officer while leaving the perpetrators untouched.
When FIJ checked the EFCC’s website and social media pages, there was no information on the outcome of the invitation extended to the siblings one month ago.
