Farouq Hassan (pseudonym), a Lagos businessman, booked a flight to Dubai for his wife in January 2021, but Egyptair cancelled. The airline promised to refund his £476 flight fee within two weeks, but weeks have rolled into years.
Hassan told FIJ on Saturday that he booked the flight for his wife to join him in Dubai in 2021, but the couple’s plan was truncated as a result of the airline’s abrupt cancellation.
Egyptair promised to initiate a refund process for the businessman in a short time, but it has failed to stay true to its words.

“They promised to refund after two weeks,” Hassan said.
“Every time I message them, they keep saying that they were working on it.”

FIJ’s inquiries to Egyptair’s email addresses returned responses that they were blocked.

Blocked or inactive emails have become a common response from some airlines with cases of flight cancellation.
Like Egyptair, Dana Air has had its email inbox unable to receive messages because it is out of storage.
Customers who have experienced this have been left stranded and frustrated.
Like Hassan and his wife, another couple was tested when Dana Air cancelled their post-wedding trip. They did not get a refund.
Egyptair had not responded to FIJ’s direct messages on X and Facebook at press time.
