Sam Amadi, a former chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has petitioned Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police, over the publication of hate speeches by ‘Lagospedia’, a handle on X.

Lagospedia, a pro-Lagos State X handle, has been increasingly broadcasting inciteful posts against the Igbo since the imminent #EndBadGovernance protest was announced.

On July 27, the faceless operator of the page originated a hashtag #IgboMustGo, asking the Igbo to be ejected from the southwest.

“Lagosians and every Southwest stakeholder should prepare for the massive protest of #IgboMustGo on the 20th – 30th of August,” Lagospedia tweeted.

“They have one month from now to leave and relocate their business from all southwest states. We urge all Yorubas living in the southeast to return home.”

The 1999 constitution of Nigeria guarantees all Nigerians freedom of movement and to reside, do business and own property in any part of the country without any hindrance on the basis of tribe, ethnicity or language.

On the basis of that tweet and series of others by the page and other individuals, Amadi, also a legal practitioner, has requested the police authorities to investigate and prosecute all individuals found to have committed the crimes.

The petition was dated and received by the IGP’s office on Wednesday.

The petition noted an established pattern of organised hate narratives authored by some people in the past, particularly during the last general election. Notable among such people was Bayo Onanuga, a special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on information and strategy.

Earlier on Tuesday, FIJ alerted the public that Lagospedia had been deliberately engineering hatred and violent animosity against the Igbo.

The United Nations, which Nigeria is a member of, and whose resolutions, treaties and protocols the country is a signatory to, defines hate speech as any communication against a person on the basis of their ethnicity or religion.
