The staff of Extreme Manufacturing Nigeria Ltd., Ibadan, Oyo State, were on Saturday, beaten by military personnel attached to Operation Burst on the orders of one Basam, the company’s plant manager.

A source, on condition of anonymity, told FIJ that casual staff had gathered at the gate of the company and refused to enter as they wanted a change to their welfare. This, the source said, was after a letter they had earlier written was ignored.

Some of their complaints bordered on poor remuneration. According to this source, they were being paid N26,000 per month for 12-hour work done daily.

“Peter, the operations manager; and Seun, production manager, came out to cajole them,” the source told FIJ. “Then Basam, the plant manager, who had asked the police to patrol the facility since Tuesday, got the services of the joint security task force of Oyo State, Operation Burst, to chase and brutalise the boys.

“These boys did not cause any trouble; they did not fight. They even wrote a letter for the cause. But Basam brought military men to tie them up and beat them. One of them fainted.”

On Sunday, this source told FIJ that two of the assaulted workers were missing.

When FIJ attempted to contact EMNL via the phone number on its website, the number was switched off. A text message sent to the company was not responded to at press time.

Efforts to contact Onyema Nwachukwu, army spokesman; and Adewale Osifeso, police spokesman in Oyo State, proved abortive as they neither answered calls nor replied text messages sent to them.
