Remi Abass, the reinstated Chairman of Irewole Local Government, Osun State, has been buried according to Islamic rites.
Abass’ body was laid to rest at his family house in Ile-Sagba, Ikire. The late Abass was one of the victims of the violence which erupted in Osun on Monday following a crisis sparked by a controversial Court of Appeal ruling and a reinstatement claim from the All Progressives Congress (APC)-elected local government chairmen and councillors.
“Around 10:15 am yesterday we were at the Secretariat waiting to hear the verdict of the court. When he heard gunshots. Thirty minutes later, we saw that they had killed Abass. Since yesterday, everyone has been at home due to the tension,” an eyewitness told FIJ.

Attempts to speak with Abass’ family were denied as the family shunned and drove this journalist away.
When FIJ visited the Irewole Local Government it was locked. Socio-economic activities were also completely grounded with few movements.
On February 10, the Akure division of the Court of Appeal dismissed a case filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) disputing the election of October 15, 2022, which produced the chairmen and councillors across the state’s local government areas (LGAs) and local council development areas (LCDAs).

The PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC), the affected chairmen’s political party, have been locked in a war of words, with both sides interpreting the judgment differently.
While the APC believed the dismissal of the PDP’s application meant the return of its party members, the PDP argued that the chairmen remained sacked per a subsisting judgment of court obtained by the All Peoples Party (APP).
