The federal government has refused to acknowledge the achievements of Goodness Nwachukwu and Alice Oluwafemiayo, Nigerian athletes who set new world records at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Thursday. 

Nwachukwu broke the women’s discus throw F42-44/61-64 event world record twice, a repeat of Tobi Amusan’s feat at the World Athletics Games in July.

Nwachukwu had set a new world record in South Africa on March 20, when she threw 33.35m. In Birmingham, she did it again with her first and second throws of 34.84m and 36.56m respectively. 

The 23-year-old contributed to Nigeria’s medal haul by winning the country’s fourth gold medal in Birmingham.

Oluwafemiayo recorded a total point of 123.4 kg in the women’s para-powerlifting heavyweight events to set another new world record.

However, a check by FIJ revealed that the official social media accounts of the federal government had failed to acknowledge Nwachukwu and Oluwafemiayo’s achievements. 

Sunday Dare, Nigeria’s Minister for Youth and Sports Development, who acknowledged Amusan’s victory at the World Athletics Games only after the news had gone viral, has also failed to acknowledge Nwachukwu and Oluwafemiayo.

While the Commonwealth Games website highlighted both achievements, they are not on the website of the Nigerian Ministry of youths and Sports Development.
