The Foundation for Investigative Journalism and Social Justice (FIJ) has launched an Incident Reporting Platform designed to assist journalists under attack in the course of discharging their professional duties. The initiative aims to counter increasing attacks on journalists.
Journalists who experience physical injury, arrest, detention or Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP) can now report such incidents through the platform. The service is also open to those aware of similar attacks faced by journalists.

The project recognises that journalists should not have to experience physical injury, arrest, detention, or Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP) in the course of their official duties.
This platform with user-friendly interface reaffirms FIJ’s commitment to safeguarding press freedom and supporting those who risk their lives to uncover the truth.

Practising journalism in Nigeria is an extreme sport, worsened in 2023 by Bola Tinubu’s ascension to the presidency.
Between 1986 and Tinubu’s emergence in 2023, a total of 1,034 Nigerian journalists were detained. However, by May 2024, one year into Tinubu’s presidency, 28 journalists had been detained by the state, a figure equal to the annual average of the last 38 years, nearly half of which were under military rule.
