Yusuf, a First Bank customer, has shared how the bank debited him N78,760 twice for loan repayment in May and has failed to refund him ever since.
A document made available to FIJ showed that Yusuf secured a loan from the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria through the Federal Housing Authority in 2023. The loan, repayable in monthly installments of N78,760.88 over 19 years, is being deducted from his First Bank account.
However, instead of deducting N78,760.88 once in May 2024, his First Bank account was debited twice on May 10 and 21. A copy of his account statement made available to FIJ showed the reference “FHAMortgage” on both deductions.

FIJ also gathered that First Bank rarely followed the schedule for the specific deduction dates for repayment. For instance, last month’s deduction was to take place on May 31, but the bank debited Yusuf days before the scheduled date.
Following the double deductions in May, FIJ learned, Yusuf reached out to the bank on numerous occasions, asking to be refunded the extra debited sum. But he has not received the refund to date.
“I have complained to First Bank 10 times, seven times by telephone and three times by email, but they haven’t refunded my N78,760.88 despite admitting to their wrongful deductions and assuring me they would refund it,” said Yusuf.
“Beyond the wickedness of First Bank debiting me twice in the month of May 2024, they have also failed to follow the schedule of repayment as per the specific dates. They just do things the way they like it, debiting me whenever they like.”
