On Monday, Ifeanyi Okowa, the immediate past governor of Delta State, was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly diverting N1.3 trillion in state funds for personal use.
Okowa was said to have committed the act while in office as governor between 2015 and 2023.
He was detained at the commission’s office in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, following an invitation from investigators examining the allegations.

Ironically, Okowa, while in office, had on a few occasions, played the role of an anti-corruption advocate at public gatherings. Here are two instances:
‘IT STARVES THE STATE OF VALUABLE RESOURCES’
While swearing in 12 commissioners and Special Advisers on July 4, 2015, Okowa assured Delta indigenes that his administration was one that would have zero tolerance for corruption in the state.
The ex-governor also told the newly sworn-in commissioners and special advisers that it would not be business as usual in the management of government activities, urging them to be honest, diligent and responsible in the discharge of their duties.
“Corruption starves the state of valuable resources that could be used for infrastructural development, improve our educational systems, boost our healthcare system and take care of the poor and needy,” said Okowa.
“Worse is that anywhere it is allowed to fester the cost of doing business becomes prohibitive.

“I want to seek the support and partnership of all public office holders to lead the fight against corruption in their respective offices, that is the only way to retain the trust and confidence the people have bestowed upon us.”
‘PRUDENT FUND MANAGEMENT AND ZERO TOLERANCE’
While addressing a gathering at the inauguration of the Boards of Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency on August 1, 2019, Okowa warned political officeholders in the state against fraud and the mismanagement of public funds.
He also urged top government functionaries to be mindful of any manifestation of graft, impropriety and corruption as his administration planned to be transparent at all times.

“Prudent fund management demands zero tolerance for any manifestation of graft, impropriety and corruption, and I, therefore, urge you to strive to live above board and employ transparency in the conduct of all your duties, as selflessness is key,” Okowa said, at the gathering.
“Our vision of a strong Delta is aimed at transforming the state into an inter-connected and united entity; that means we have to work hard to bring development to our people, not only to enhance their general welfare but as a way of building sustainable peace.”
