The management of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), has issued a warning for unethical behaviour to Anthony Agbegbedia, a lecturer of the department of conflict studies who students accused of demanding sex in exchange of grades.

In a circular signed by Mufutau Ibrahim dated November 5 but obtained by FIJ’s reporter on Friday, it was noted that the university management considered the investigative panel’s report on the accusations of sexual harassment against Agbegbedia and approved his reprimand.

It read:

“The University Management at its meeting of Monday, 4th November, 2024, considered the report of the investigative panel on alleged case of sexual harassment levelled against Dr Anthony Agbegbedia and approved that Dr Agbegbedia should be reprimanded by issuing him a warning for unethical behaviour line with Section 8.8(ii) of the revised regulations governing the conditions of service of senior staff of Federal University Oye-Ekiti.”

Some students of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies accused Agbegbedia of making sexual advances towards them.

Sussanah Abiodun (not real name), who was Agbegbedia’s project supervisee in 2021, told FIJ in October that he frustrated her efforts at becoming a graduate after she denied the sexual advances he made towards her. With the help of another staff of the university, Abiodun was able to escape his clutches.

Yemi Olaoye (not real name), another former student, told FIJ that Agbegbedia made sexual advances towards her in 2023, which she refused. She failed his courses for two consecutive semesters and passed other courses in her third year.

She suspected that Agbegbedia deliberately failed her because she refused his advances.

Her name was absent when the university released its graduation list for her set in 2024. Her father wrote letters to the university management asking them to address this issue. The university management told Olaoye and her father that they would investigate the claims.

However, the university management promoted Agbegbedia to the rank of Associate Professor at the same time they claimed to have been investigating the sexual assault accusations against him.

When FIJ called her on Friday to inquire if there was an update on her graduation status, she said she had heard nothing from the school.

“I have not heard anything from the school yet,” Olaoye told FIJ.

In May, FIJ had reported how  Anthony Asekhauno, a lecturer of the department of philosophy at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) had raped and sexually harassed some of his former students on different occassions.
