The management of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), has promoted Anthony Agbegbedia, a lecturer of the Department of Conflict Studies, who was exposed by some of his students and former students, to the rank of Associate Professor, FIJ has learnt.
Another lecturer of the department, who pleaded anonymity, informed FIJ of this development on Friday.
“Good afternoon. The lecturer (Agbegbedia) has been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor by the university management,” the lecturer wrote FIJ on Friday.
Two of his former students and one of his students at the Department of Conflict Studies at FUOYE had narrated to FIJ how the lecturer abused his position to demand sex in exchange for grades.
Yemi Olaoye, a student in the same department, has yet to know if she will graduate alongside her mates. The first graduating list was out and her name was not on it after failing his course for two consecutive semesters. She told FIJ that she suspected Agbegbedia deliberately made her fall his courses because she rejected his sexual advances.
The undergraduate anticipating graduation and justice told FIJ on Sunday that she was unsure she would get justice with Agbegbedia’s promotion.
“The school had said they were investigating the case but have not done anything about it. With this promotion, I think getting justice would be hard for me. Can you imagine the school promoting a sex-for-grades lecturer?” she lamented.

On Saturday, FIJ sent a message to Foluso Ogunmodede, FUOYE’s public relations officer. He responded, “Will revert. Good afternoon”, but FIJ got no response.
FIJ also called Ogunmodede on Monday, and he said the same thing.
“I will confirm from the school management and get back to you,” he told FIJ on Monday.

While the school’s public relations officer has yet to confirm this development from the school management, the group chat for lecturers of the FUOYE’s Department of Conflict Studies is brimming with congratulatory messages for Agbededia and his messages of appreciation.
Sometimes, survivors of sex for grade advances and harassment from university lecturers do not get justice as the school management often forgives the perpetrator and moves on with time.
FIJ had reported in May how Anthony Asekhauno, a lecturer of the department of philosophy at UNIBEN had raped and sexually harassed his ex-students on different occasions. When FIJ called him for comments, he asked FIJ to read the school’s pronouncement on the case.
