Ola Bolarin (not real name), a Lagos-based businessman, has accused Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) of refusing to refund his N12,000 after he had a failed mobile banking transaction on August 11.
Bolarin told FIJ he had wanted to send the money to a First Bank account belonging to a merchant as payment for the clothes he bought from him during the period.
“I went to a boutique to buy a pair of clothes which amounted to N12,000 on that day,” Bolarin said.
“When I first tried to send the money to the merchant via the bank’s mobile application, I got an error. On trying a second time, I received a debit alert of N12,000.

“I waited for two hours but the money was not reversed. On many occasions, the beneficiary also checked his balance on his First Bank account but he was never credited.”
Abolarin told FIJ that in the end, he had to return the clothes to the merchant because he no longer had sufficient funds in his account to effect another transfer.
“On August 14, three days after I was debited, I went to GTBank to file a complaint. After filling a complaint form, I went home with the belief that my N12,000 would be reversed within 7 days.”
The businessman said despite all the efforts he made, the bank is yet to reverse the money into his account. He also said he sent emails and direct messages to the bank on Twitter but received no positive response.
“It’s been two weeks and the bank has refused to reverse my N12,000. I want my money back,” he said.
FIJ made several phone calls to GTBank for comments on the issue but they were not answered. An email sent to the bank had also not been responded to as of press time.
