The Muhammadu Buhari administration is winding down to a close in 22 days, and the nation is gearing up for a baton change to Bola Tinubu, the current president-elect.

Buhari had earlier asked Nigerians to forgive him if they were displeased with the actions he made during his administration.

The retired army general was touted in 2015 as a solution to Nigeria’s corruption woes with zero tolerance for corruption.

However, under his watch, money earmarked for public expenditure has mysteriously vanished. In some cases, animals were blamed.

₦36 SWALLOWED BY SNAKE

On February 10, 2018, Philomena Chieshe, clerk of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), claimed a mysterious snake swallowed ₦36 million from the board’s office.

She said she could not account for the sum which had been raised from the sale of scratch cards.

JAMB, however, refuted this claim later on.

IN 2017, FG SPENT ₦2 MILLION ON FUMIGATION, YET RATS CHASED BUHARI OUT OF OFFICE

When President Muhammadu Buhari returned to the country in August 2017 after spending 103 days away, news of him working from his house in the presidential villa, made the rounds.

Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the president on Media, said rats had taken over the president’s office and the air conditioning unit, making it uninhabitable.

However, findings showed that the presidency had earlier spent ₦2 million on fumigation of the office.

SENATORS CONTRIBUTED N70 MILLION, MONKEYS STOLE IT FROM FARM

Abdullahi Adamu, chairman of the Northern Senators Forum in 2018, claimed that ₦70 million gathered by northern senators in the 7th assembly was stolen from his farm by monkeys.

Adamu was removed as chairman of the forum following this incident.

GORILLA STOLE N6.8 MILLION WHILE TERMITES ATE N17 BILLION-WORTH VOUCHERS

It appears easier to accuse animals of carting away money in Nigeria. In June 2022, Kano Zoological Gardens lost ₦6.8 million. A finance officer in the zoo claimed a gorilla snuck into an office to steal the sum.

A probe was initiated, and it was later claimed that robbers perpetrated the crime.

Similarly, in August of the same year, the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) alleged that termites ate vouchers that explained how the agency spent N17 billion.
