A yet-to-be-identified individual has continued to send threat messages to FIJ.

The first of such threats was made on May 15, when the unknown person sent a WhatsApp message to FIJ’s official contact number, threatening to decapitate the intended recipient.

“I will do whatever it takes to look for you in this Nigeria and cut off your head from your body. Next time you will know how to mind your business. It is a promise,” the text read.

The aggressor sent more messages, believed to be directed at a female reporter within the organisation, on Friday June 3.

They wrote, “E nor go lie lie better for you and your 4th generation, useless woman.”

Threat messages via Whatsapp

Although the sender’s number has an Italian country code, FIJ strongly believes the person is resident in Nigeria.

When our reporter engaged the sender anonymously via Whatsapp, the unknown person proposed a N255,000 travel payment offer for a British Airways flight ticket from Cyprus to the United Kingdom.

After our reporter requested an invoice to precede payment, the person asked, “why requesting an invoice?” and then ended the conversation. The aggressor also quickly blocked our reporter on all available channels after the conversation.

The sender’s Whatsapp bio reads ‘Travel & Transportation’, while the username is ‘~L’.

FIJ has published a number of travel-related social-justice stories but — even if there are primary suspects — will not speculate about the identity of the sender of the threats.

Also, FIJ intends to press on with its social-justice reporting and will not ‘mind your business’ as demanded by the person.
