The cost of running a medical test in Lagos State has risen by over 100% between July 2024 and March 2025, FIJ has gathered.
Sources who visit the state-funded General Hospital in Ikorodu said they have had to pay higher prices than they used to less than a year ago.
One source, whose relative receives regular treatment at the hospital and cannot be named for privacy concerns, shared a picture of the hospital’s physiotherapy department’s price list.
They took the picture on July 26. According to the price list, persons younger than 13 years would get six treatment sessions for N7,000. Those from 13 to 69 were charged N10,000 for the same service, while those older than 69 would have to pay N9,000.
Wax bath at that time cost N500, while traction cost N1,500.

These figures, FIJ found, had gone up by varying degrees.
The source, whose relative receives their treatment in the hospital, obtained a March 20 picture of the hospital’s proposed bills. They said on Thursday that this proposal had taken effect.
With new age brackets, the cost for persons below 16 years was N15,000. Being the cost for the youngest patients the hospital expects, this fee represents an over 100% increase from the old fee for the same demographic.
The next age bracket of 16–69 years would pay N30,000, which is 200% more than the N10,000 they had to pay before. Anyone older than this would pay N20,000, which is over 100% more than the old N9,000 fee.

Other costs also went up. Wax therapy, which used to be N500, is N10,000, and traction, which used to cost N1,500 per session, now costs N15,000.
These changes represent over 1,800% increase for the former, and 900% increase for the latter.
The sources say the economic situation of the country has made it costlier to access healthcare services in government-run hospitals. Yet, they have no option but to adjust to the new prices.
Since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, his administration has introduced several policies that have directly led to an increase in the cost of living.
In March, Tinubu defended those policies and said the country had been living above its means for several years.
