Police officers attached to Ilorin F Division Police Station, Kwara State, have been accused of assaulting a young man who committed no crime.

In a viral video, the young man, now in the hospital, said that the police dumped him in front of his hostel after beating him.

The young man, who is also an international student, said that the police arrested him and two of his friends on Tuesday but let one go free because they knew him.

He said the police forced him and his friend into their van before searching their phones, and that when the officers found nothing incriminating on their phones, they asked his friend why he was not into internet fraud.

“They asked him why he was not doing ‘Yahoo’. That was the first question. I told my friend not to answer them. Before I knew it, they started beating me inside the vehicle. They started punching my stomach,” the student said in the video.

He said that even though he started having attacks because of the punches he received in the stomach, the officers took the two of them to their station, where they confiscated their phones and then threw them into the cell.

He said he became ‘unconscious’ inside the cell and then the officers dumped him in front of his hostel.

“I was so unconscious inside the cell that I couldn’t even feel my legs. Then after about 30 minutes in the cell, they brought me out and said they would take me to my hostel,” he said.

The caretaker of the hostel said in the video that immediately after the police officers dropped the student in front of the hostel, he fell to the ground and lay there.

The caretaker stated that he speedily carried the student on his shoulders to the hospital while the police officers watched him.

FIJ called SP Okasanmi Ajayi, Kwara State Police spokesperson, but his line was busy. He had also not responded to a text message sent to his phone at press time.
