Civil unrest erupted in parts of the Ojota and Mile 12 areas of Lagos State on Friday, FIJ has learnt.

Sources told FIJ some youths in the axis fired gunshots sporadically and brandished various weapons to disrupt peace.

Vehicles approaching Mile 12 from Ikorodu could not pass because of the violence and had to turn back for fear of attacks.

The cause of the violence remained unclear as of press time, and even the police had no answers.

When FIJ called Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, he said normalcy had been restored to the area but the police were investigating the cause of the violence.

Muyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, however, tweeted that police officers had been dispatched to the area.

He described the instigators as protesters destroying private and public institutions, and said anyone doing so “would be treated as an armed robber”.

Protests have been occurring across the country since the Central Bank of Nigeria and President Muhammadu Buhari insisted on the illegality of old N500 and N1,000 notes.
