Tunde Abass, the Nigerian detained at Onipanu Police Station for filming a policeman harassing a citizen in Lagos, has been released from detention, following public outrage over his arrest.
Adejobi Muyiwa, the Public Relations Officer, Lagos State, announced on Twitter on Tuesday that Tunde has finally been released.
“Onipanu Issue: Released Tunde Abass in my office about 10 minutes ago, in the company of Kabiru Mohammed, the man Tunde rescued from the police, his Dad and other Youth Leaders from Lagos East. Solidarity forever,” he said.
Following the release, activists have condemned how Tunde was tortured while in detention.

Omoyele Sowore, a Nigerian activist, shared pictures showing how Tunde was battered and bruised in detention. “Battered, Bruised but Unbroken! Tunde Abass has been freed from @PoliceNG custody, he was detained for filming police brutality. Thanks everyone for weighing in, may you never walk alone during this era of tyranny,” Omoyele said.
Reacting to Omoyele’s post, Akitude Temitope said: “This is the kind of police brutality that birthed #EndSARS protest. Tunde Abass was beaten blue-black, given a red eye, tortured and serrated for filming criminal police. Nothing can stop the second wave of EndSars.”
