Abba Kyari, the former Head of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), has pleaded not guilty to allegations levelled against him by the United States court.

Joseph Egbunike, a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), is leading the panel probing the allegations of fraud against Kyari. But the embattled supercop has however denied receiving an N8 million bribe from Ramon Abbas, the international fraudster bettter known as Hushpuppi.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had served the Nigeria Police an arrest warrant for Kyari over his alleged involvement in a $1.1 million fraud perpetrated by Husspuppi.

According to ThisDay, the panel probing Kyari is expected to review his submission next week after which the report and recommendations would be submitted to Usman Baba, the Inspector-General of Police.

Meanwhile, Egbunike, who is leading the panel, has been under fire since FIJ revealed that he has records of violating human rights and disobeying court orders.

FIJ had also revealed how Egbunike joined other police chiefs to approve more than N1billion for non-existing or shabbily executed police transit camp projects in Benue, Bauchi, Plateau, Katsina and Kano states.

Documents obtained by FIJ showed that the two police camps meant for Gbajimba, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, and Falgore Forest, Kano, were awarded to Karakas Development and Properties Nigeria Limited between 2018 and 2019 and were to be delivered within 14 weeks from the date of the contract agreement.

FIJ’s visit to the project locations revealed that nothing or little had been done — three years later.

However, many Nigerians have wondered why the alleged corrupt police chief would be leading a panel probing a policeman accused of bribery and corruption.

“Isn’t it a shame that the man who is leading the team to investigate Abba Kyari was himself part of a group who illegally approve 1 billion Naira for fake police projects?” Akintunde Babatunde, a human rights activist, wondered. “Why is the entire police force full of people with dubious characters?”

“They clearly don’t know the meaning of transparency and justice,” Adenike Awe, another human rights activist, said.

Awe suggested that someone independent of the police should be on the investigation panel.
