The national power grid suffered a major setback after it collapsed on Tuesday. This makes it the 10th time in 2024.

Nigeria National Grid, a page on X that provides real-time updates on the grid and electric power distribution, confirmed this on Tuesday afternoon.

At 2:45 pm, the hourly power generation readings by Nigeria’s power Generation Companies (GenCos) had dropped to zero megawatts (0MW).

In its update on the issue via a statement on X, the TCN said the national grid experienced a partial disturbance at about 1:52 pm due to a series of lines and generator trappings.

Power distribution companies (DisCos), such as Ikeja Electric, Abuja Electricity and Jos Electricity, have also posted updates on the outage experienced by customers across the country.

“Please, be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 05 November 2024, at 1:52 pm, affecting supply within our network. Restoration is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders,” wrote Ikeja Electric.

The other DisCos shared similar updates, as they equally assured Nigerians that plans were in place to restore power.

Meanwhile, the TCN noted that data from the National Control Centre (NCC) revealed that a part of the grid was not affected by the bulk power disruption.

“TCN engineers are already working to quickly restore bulk power supply to the states affected by the partial disturbance. Presently, bulk power supply has been restored to Abuja, at 2:49 pm, and we are gradually restoring to other parts of the country. We sincerely apologise for every inconvenience this may cause our electricity customers,” wrote Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s general manager of public affairs.

FIJ earlier reported that the constant collapse of the power grid was a compounded problem for stakeholders in the power sector.

Habu Sadeik, a power sector analyst, also told FIJ that grid collapses in Nigeria often happen due to the struggle between the electricity supply by the GenCos and the demand from the power distribution companies (DisCos). In this case, the TCN acts as the intermediary between both parties through the grid.
