A software engineer has narrated how officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) harassed him for taking a walk in his estate.
The engineer, who asked not to be named, had stepped out to get some things at Primewater View Gardens 2, Lekki, Lagos, around 1:35 am on Thursday when the officers accosted him.
“The estate has a 24/7 open store we buy things from at past midnight, and I’m nocturnal,” he told FIJ.
“Six to seven of them brought a van into the estate. They were wearing the NDLEA uniforms and holding guns.”
The officers appeared to be looking for a particular resident but were unsure of where they were going.

“At first, it was as though they came to get a particular person, but later it appeared as though they were roaming around the blocks in the estate. They went to another person’s apartment and banged their door.”
They ordered the engineer to take them to his apartment to conduct a search for hard drugs because he appeared suspicious to them.
“I said I didn’t do drugs and offered to take them to the apartment. They later said it didn’t matter and I should settle them or they would take me to their office in Ikoyi. They said they could take me away and make up drug stories,” he told FIJ.
“I had to beg them while I quickly uninstalled my bank apps. They left me and told me not to go out again till morning.”
When FIJ contacted NDLEA’s Lagos office, the line could not be reached. A mail sent to them had also not been responded to at press time.
