Nigerians are demanding proof and the names of the 27 Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officers dismissed for their involvement in fraudulent activities and misconduct in 2024.

This followed the announcement of the officers’ dismissal via a statement issued by Dele Oyewale, the head of media and publicity at the EFCC, on Monday.

While many are asking for proof such as the names and pictures of the dismissed officers, others want to know if they would be prosecuted after the dismissal.

According to the statement, the 27 officers were dismissed from the Commission’s workforce to enforce integrity and rid the EFCC of fraudulent elements.

“The officers were dismissed for various offences bordering on fraudulent activities and misconduct,” the spokesperson stated.

“Their dismissal, following the recommendation of the Staff Disciplinary Committee of the EFCC, was ratified by the Executive Chairman, Mr Ola Olukoyede. Olukoyede reiterated the commitment of the Commission to zero tolerance for corruption, warning that no officer is immune to disciplinary measures.”

When FIJ checked through the comments section of the EFCC’s post on X, most responses called for the release of the names and photos of the dismissed officers.

For many, the EFCC’s failure to identify the dismissed officers by name and picture, especially given its swiftness in naming suspected fraudsters, was hypocritical and suggested a lack of transparency.

X user Emeka wrote, “Publish their names and pictures. What next after the dismissal? Prosecution?”

While Oluwadamilola commended the dismissal and asked what next, another user @OneManCongress wrote: “Great job, can’t help but think their names should be published so the public is aware and this will deter them from going around parading themselves as staff.”

Abiodun Michael, another X user, also wanted the EFCC to “publish their names and pictures” just as Immanuel Okafor stated, “The EFCC’s decision to dismiss 27 officers is commendable, but Nigerians deserve full transparency. The Commission should publish the names of these dismissed officers to ensure accountability. Without this, the fight against corruption within the EFCC itself may lack the credibility it needs to inspire public trust. Tell Nigerians who they are.”

X users like Oluwasegun, Judith and Daniel wrote: “No evidence,” “We want their names and pictures, so people will know they are no longer your officials,” “What are the names of the 27 officers? Where are their pictures? What command are they attached to? If these [pieces of] information aren’t in the public domain, you guys aren’t ready.”

Kabir Adebayo, who also asked the Commission to identify the officers, wrote: “Dear EFCC, please publish their names and their pictures. When you went to pick innocent medical students in Ile Ife, you published their names and their faces as criminals for just sleeping in their hostels so keep the same energy, please. Let us see the dismissed officers.”

It is better to make their names public so they don’t use their past known employment (with the EFCC) to defraud those unaware of their dismissals, @Seniorfather2 added.
