Nigerians received the removal of five ministers from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet with mixed feelings.

According to a document shared by the presidency on Wednesday afternoon, the five ministers included Uju-Kennedy Ohanenye, the minister of women’s affairs, and Lola Ade-John, the minister of tourism.

Others were Tahir Mamman, minister of education; Abdullahi Muhammad Gwarzo, minister of state, housing and urban development and Jamila Bio Ibrahim, the minister of youth development.

The presidency also announced those who will replace four of the discharged ministers as follows: Morufu Olatunji Alausa, minister of education; Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, minister of women’s affairs; Ayodele Olawande, minister of youth development; Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, minister of state, housing and urban development.

Although many Nigerians have lauded the removal of these ministers on the one hand, many have opined that the discharged ministers were lightweights and some who truly deserved to be discharged were retained.

For instance, @ayobamiteriba wrote on X, “The discharged ministers are lightweights. We don’t need 48 ministers for efficiency. Argentina slashed the number of government ministries to 10 from 19. That’s a 47% deep cut of wastage. It’s good to see a publication from the presidency, but we don’t need chess moves but [a] cut down!”

While @epalyHarcourt wrote: “What happens to the minister of sports?” @greatolasoji1 also asked: “What is the Minister of Agric and Blue Economy still doing in office? Are their discharge notifications loading?”

“You guys left the minister of power? Someone who should be arrested for multiple failures in his duty,” Frank Nwodika replied to the Presidency.

According to @saniology, the list of discharged ministers was “as good as nothing”. This was just as @baKano__ said the president was sacking the wrong ministers. “Minister of power should be sacked please; I am saying this on behalf of every Nigerian,” he added.

Oba Olusegun also noted that there should be a whole lot more heads rolling. He wrote, “For instance, the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, headed by Oyetola — a pretty much useless ministry, zero impact!”

“Ministry of power left. Ministry of FCT left. Ministry of finance left.
T-pain is not ready. The partisan in failure,” Olekwugochomah added.

@Ridwansaidudgw also feels that many more ministers should have made the list as he asked: “Where are Adelabu, Bosun and Matawalle? Are they not discharged? Nigeria in total blackout for almost a week but Adelabu is still in the cabinet? Are we serious?”

@koshinspiration thinks that Nigerians will not buy into the idea of a cabinet reshuffle until the Minister of Agriculture gets booted out.

While @lawnreigh1 felt Tinubu should also sack himself due to the high rate of hardship in the country, @A_sleemy said retaining certain ministers meant the president was not ready.

Also, @Sufyanu32 said it was a wrong move considering that key ministers were not affected by the discharge, while @afamsson wondered why the minister of agriculture was not discharged. “Baba (the minister) is a deadwood and needs to be removed. We need a minister of Agriculture who will be proactive, and have technical knowledge and expertise like the president of ADB,” he wrote.

@ACHILEMY1 asked: “Can the President sack some non-performing ministers whose action is not helping to distribute our common wealth well?”

Similar comments went on in reaction to the presidency’s statement.

Although there were no specific explanations for the ministers’ removal, the presidency said Tinubu made Wednesday’s decisions to “reinvigorate the Administration’s capacity for optimal efficiency pursuant to his commitment to deliver on his promises to Nigerians”.
