The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has shut down its campuses to stop protests over the death of a female student, FIJ can report.

The university also ordered all students to vacate its halls of residence following the shutdown.

According to Abiodun Olanrewaju, the university’s spokesman, the shutdown is due to the ongoing protest by the students over the death of Aishat Adeshina, a final year student of Foreign Languages, on Thursday.

“Having exhausted all necessary avenues to call the students to order and allow normalcy to return to the campus and its environs, the authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, have accordingly closed down the school until further notice,” Olanrewaju said in a statement.

“In view of this, all students are hereby directed to vacate their halls of residence and the campus latest by 12:00 noon on Saturday, 2nd October 2021.”

FIJ had reported how Aishat died of neglect at the university’s health care centre after complaining of shortness of breath.

Following her sudden death, the university students trooped out to protest the alleged negligence of officials at the health centre.
