The Usman Ododo-led Kogi State government is set to spend N3 billion on renovating the state government house in 2025, FIJ has found. This is after the government spent N2,290,489,340.23 on the same project in 2024.

According to the state’s approved 2025 budget, the executive arm proposed a N962 million outlay to rehabilitate and repair the government offices in 2024, but eventually got N2.362 billion.

As of December 2024, the government had already spent N2.290 billion on the exercise. In 2025, the same administration proposed and got state assembly approval for N3 billion to do the same project.

The state government also spent N15 million on purchasing residential furniture for the government house in 2024. It is set to spend the same amount on buying furniture again this year.

Another line item on the capital expenditure budget that appears recurrent is the ‘purchase of industrial equipment’. What the government spent on this in 2024 was N50 million. This sum mirrors its 2025 approved budget for the same purpose.

The repairs and rehabilitation cost is one of several capital expenditure costs which went up in 2025.

By contrast, Ododo, on December 30, 2024, gave out N3 billion to 80 communities across the state as part of the Agro-Climate Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project, a partnership between the Kogi State Government and the World Bank Group.

The governor handed cheques to over 2,381 direct beneficiaries in more than 170 groups from the 80 communities directly affected.

If at the end of the year, the state government spends all its projected sum on renovating the office it renovated last year, then the exercise would have consumed in one year the equivalent of climate change aid for 2,381 people.
