Bright Osaigbovo, an Abuja-based engineer, has narrated to FIJ how his N86,726 got stuck between Opay, a fintech company, and Aero Contractors, a Nigerian airline, after an unsuccessful attempt to book a flight.
Speaking with FIJ, Osaigbovo said his wife, Princess Uyioghosa Osaigbovo, booked a flight for his family to Benin in March with his debit card.
“On March 12, my wife tried booking a flight from Abuja to Benin with Aero airline with booking reference 14Y2UB,” Osaigbovo said.
“She used my Opay debit card to pay N86,726 for the tickets on Aero Air’s website through the unified payment gateway and an instant debit was made on my account.
“From Aero’s website, an error message displayed read: ‘Error from Payment Gateway CREDIT CARD: true PAYMENT_ERROR_Error.'”
The Abuja-based engineer said when he called both institutions, they put the blame on each other every single time.
“I called Opay customer care who informed me that Aero received the money. I also went to the Aero complaint desk in Abuja airport and was informed that the payment was not processed due to the error.
“I contacted Unified payment gateway and was informed that I should contact my bank for my cashback.
“I reached out to Opay again and was asked to file a card for dispute through their mobile app. When I did, the status of the transaction there read ‘Declined’.
“Both institutions have been tossing me to and fro and I don’t know who to believe anymore. I have exhausted all avenues of reaching both Opay and Aero Contractors for my money.”
When FIJ contacted Opay and Aero Contractors on April 19. Each of them asked the customer to visit the other party as they were not in possession of the money.

In an email exchange, Opay said they were not in possession of the money as it was successfully processed from their end.
“I just confirmed with my team and this transaction was successfully processed from OPay to the airline,” Opay wrote.
“The customer will have to liaise with the airline for resolution. The team will also get in touch with the customer to keep him abreast on this.”
An Aero Contractors customer care agent who simply identified herself as Aminat told FIJ the company would reach out to Osaigbovo.
Osaigbovo said he got a call from the airline but it was still the same story of not being in possession of his N86,726.
“Aero said they did not receive the payment. I visited their office again after the call but it was the same old story,” he said.
